0W-16 or 0W-20: Which Does Your RAV4 Need?
Toyota’s newest engines (Dynamic Force, and the M15A in the latest small cars) are designed around 0W-16, an ultra-thin oil that cuts friction for economy and protects the hybrid system on its frequent stop-starts. Older 1.8 hybrids use 0W-20. Both should meet API SP / ILSAC GF-6 (or ACEA C5). If 0W-16 is unavailable, 0W-20 is allowed as a temporary substitute only.
Oil Change Intervals
Toyota’s interval is typically 12 months or ~10,000 miles. Hybrid engines stop and start constantly, so clean oil of the correct grade is important — it must protect on every restart.
Tip: always fit a new filter with the oil and top up only with the same grade.
How to Check Your Oil Level
Step 1: Park on level ground and wait at least 5 minutes after turning off the engine.
Step 2: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then remove again to read the level.
Step 3: The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Top up in small amounts if needed.
