Which? surveyed 63,334 owners covering 72,470 cars. The headline split is where you take the car: £361 at a franchised dealer against £260 at an independent garage, roughly 39% more. By fuel type:

Two things stand out. The electric car is the cheapest to service in the 5–9 year band. The plug-in hybrid is consistently the most expensive, because it carries a complete combustion engine as well as a battery system — which contradicts the common assumption that a hybrid is the low-maintenance option.

Useful because they are tiered by engine size, so you can see exactly what pushes the number up. “From” prices: oil and filter change £129.95 (0–1400cc) rising to £189.95 (3000cc+); interim service £183.95 to £248.95; full service £243.95 to £308.95. Kwik Fit also lists an EV service from £227.95.

Are maintenance costs actually rising?
Yes, on the official measure. The ONS publishes a consumer price index specifically for vehicle maintenance and repairs — series D7ED, “Maintenance & Repairs”, with 2015 as the base year of 100.

Released 22 July 2026. Costs have risen in each of the last two years. If you are budgeting from a figure you found a couple of years ago, revise it upward.
Worth knowing: the AA no longer publishes its historic running-cost tables — its page now offers cost-per-mile formulas only. The RAC’s general running-costs hub was last updated in July 2022. The two organisations most people would turn to have largely stepped back from publishing this data, which is why so much of what circulates online is unsourced.
Why a 7-seater or large SUV costs more
Moving up to an MPV or large SUV does not increase costs in proportion to the number of seats. The increase comes from the mechanical consequences of a bigger, heavier vehicle:
- Larger oil capacity. A bigger engine takes more litres, and where the manufacturer specifies an approval-restricted oil that difference compounds.
- A physically larger, higher-capacity battery — and often an AGM requirement rather than a choice.
- Larger tyres. Greater diameter and section width, and a heavier vehicle needs a higher load index, which narrows the range you can legally fit and pushes you up the price ladder.
- Larger brake components, with more mass to stop — so both the parts and the wear rate move against you.
- Engine-size tiering. As the Kwik Fit prices above show, published service costs step up with engine size regardless of anything else.
The published data supports the direction — the RAC puts large cars at £400+ against £170–£210 for a small car. But the mechanism matters more than the average, because it tells you which 7-seater will be cheap and which will not. Check the actual consumable specifications before you buy, not after.
What your specific car takes
Generic cost guides stop at a single number. The consumables your particular car requires are what actually set the bill, and those are knowable in advance.
- Engine oil — grade, manufacturer approval and capacity. Capacity is the figure almost nobody quotes and the one that moves the total most: 4.3 litres and 6.8 litres are not comparable. The approval constrains what you are permitted to use, and approval-restricted oils cost more.
- Battery — a fitment constraint, not a preference. A stop-start car cannot take a standard flooded battery. An EFB car can take EFB or be upgraded to AGM; an AGM car needs AGM. Never downgrade.
- Bulbs, wipers and filters — whether your car uses a single H4 per headlamp or a four-bulb system changes the cost of a headlight refresh; a vehicle-specific rear wiper costs more than a common front size.
