EV Consumables: What Electric and Hybrid Cars Still Need

An electric car does away with about half the service schedule and quietly makes the other half more important. There is no oil, no spark plugs and no exhaust — but there is still a 12V battery that will strand you when it fails, tyres that wear faster, and brake discs that fail in a way petrol cars rarely manage. Here is what actually changes, and what is just marketing.

What an EV genuinely does not need

  • Engine oil and oil filter — there is no combustion engine. (A plug-in hybrid still has both.)
  • Spark plugs — no ignition system.
  • Air filter — no engine air intake. The cabin filter is a different part and is still needed.
  • Exhaust, DPF, catalytic converter, timing belt, clutch — all absent.

The 12V battery — the part that strands electric cars

Almost every EV still has a conventional 12V battery, and it is the single most common cause of an EV refusing to start. Not the traction battery — the small one.

It exists because the safety-critical systems need a power source that is independent of the high-voltage system. VARTA describes it as a second power source ensuring the uninterrupted function of safety-critical systems in the event of a traction battery failure — powering ABS, ESP, central locking, lane assist, front assist and occupant protection. If the 12V battery dies, the car cannot wake up the high-voltage system, and a fully charged traction battery is no help at all.

AGM, EFB or standard flooded?

This is a fitment constraint, not a preference, and getting it wrong is expensive.

VARTA states it plainly: a battery for a start-stop system can only be replaced with a battery of the same type, and replacing it with a normal battery instead of an AGM or EFB results in rapid deterioration, with a breakdown inevitable. Standard lead-acid batteries cannot handle the demands of repeated discharge cycling. VARTA is equally direct on downgrading within the two: where a car came with AGM, only an AGM may be used as a replacement.

Never downgrade. It is the most common and most expensive mistake made on stop-start and electrified cars.

Is there such a thing as an “EV” 12V battery?

No — and it is worth being straight about this, because plenty of listings imply otherwise.

No major manufacturer sells a distinct EV 12V battery line. EVs are served by the same AGM and EFB ranges as everything else. VARTA treats “xEV” as an application label on its existing Dynamic range rather than a separate product, and recommends its AGM line for vehicles with start-stop and for electric vehicles with advanced energy needs. Exide covers electric and hybrid vehicles with its existing AGM, EFB and AGM Auxiliary ranges. Bosch’s UK range is the same S5 AGM, S4 EFB and S5 AX lines used across the board.

So the right question is not “which EV battery?” — it is “which AGM or EFB does my car take, in the right size and capacity?”

Which 12V battery does my EV take?

There is no shortcut here. The 12V battery varies by model, by model year and sometimes by trim — and it is not always where you would expect it. Some sit under the bonnet, some in the boot, and some in the front luggage compartment.

Four things have to match: the technology (AGM or EFB), the physical size code, the capacity in amp-hours, and the cold cranking amps. Look yours up with our compatibility checker, cross-check the handbook, and read the label on the battery you remove before ordering — that is the one source that tells you what is actually fitted. Tyres — the one place EVs genuinely need something different

An electric car is heavier than the equivalent petrol car, and it delivers peak torque from a standstill. Both of those things land on the tyres.

Load rating is the hard requirement

The load index printed on the sidewall is not advisory. Most EVs are fitted with XL (Extra Load) tyres, defined in UNECE Regulation 30 as a structure in which the carcass is more resistant than the corresponding standard tyre. Some now need more than XL can offer: ETRTO, the European tyre and rim standards body, has defined a newer HL (High Load) standard specifically because EV mass exceeded what XL could support at a given size.

At MOT, a tyre whose load capacity or speed rating does not meet the vehicle’s minimum requirement is a Major defect. Fit what the placard specifies.

The “EV tyre” markings — what they actually mean

There is no formal regulatory standard for an “EV tyre”. The GB tyre label covers only rolling resistance, wet grip and external noise. Every EV badge on a sidewall is the manufacturer’s own designation, and they do not mean the same thing as each other.

Buy on the specification, not the badge. The load index, speed rating and size on your car’s placard are the things that have to be right. An EV-branded tyre in the wrong load rating is worse than a standard tyre in the right one.

Noise-cancelling foam inside the tyre is real engineering and does exist on several EV-oriented lines — but no manufacturer we could find publishes a decibel figure for it, so treat any specific claim about how much quieter it is with caution.

Brakes — they fail differently, not less

This is the one that surprises people. Regenerative braking means the electric motor does most of the slowing, so the hydraulic brakes are used far less. The pads last much longer.

The discs, however, corrode. Brembo describes the mechanism directly: because regeneration means many braking actions are performed by the motor, the reduced use of the traditional hydraulic braking system causes dangerous corrosion of the friction components over time. Brake components stay clean by being used; when they are barely used, they rust instead.

So the replacement logic inverts. On a petrol car you expect to change pads two or three times before the discs. On an EV, the discs may need replacing while the pads still have most of their life left. Some manufacturers now sell EV-oriented brake kits with anti-corrosion disc treatment, galvanised pad backplates and copper-free friction material.

Practical advice: use the friction brakes deliberately from time to time rather than coasting everything on regen, and have the discs inspected at service even if the pads are fine.

On brake fluid, we found no authoritative source stating that EV intervals differ from combustion cars — follow the manufacturer’s schedule.

Coolant — and why it is not ordinary antifreeze

EVs still have coolant, often more circuits than a petrol car: battery thermal management, the motor and inverter, and cabin climate. The requirement is different because the coolant circulates near high-voltage components.

The key property is low electrical conductivity. There is now a formal standard for it — ASTM D8566-24, “Standard Specification for Glycol-Based Electric Vehicle Coolant with Low Electrical Conductivity”, approved in 2024 and covering battery-electric, fuel-cell, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles.

Two honest caveats. First, that standard is young, and we could not find a UK consumer coolant marketed as meeting it — so do not assume a product complies just because it is sold for EVs. Second, low-conductivity EV coolants are generally specified to be diluted only with demineralised water, not tap water, because dissolved minerals are exactly what raises conductivity.

Use the coolant specified by your manufacturer, and check the handbook rather than the colour of the liquid. Coolant colour is not a specification on any vehicle, electric or otherwise.

Cabin filters and wipers — no EV version exists

Worth saying plainly, because you will see both marketed as EV products.

There is no EV-specific cabin filter. Bosch covers electric and hybrid vehicles within a single range of more than 600 cabin filter types. MANN-FILTER offers the same three tiers — basic particulate, activated carbon, and premium — regardless of drive type. What varies is the fitment and whether you want activated carbon, exactly as on a petrol car. (MANN-FILTER does make genuinely EV-specific filtration — e-axle oil filters, fuel cell cathode air cleaners, battery cooling-air filters — but none of those are cabin filters and none are consumer aftermarket parts.)

There is no EV-specific wiper blade. Wiper fitment is determined by arm type and blade length exactly as on any other car. See our guide to wiper blade fittings.

Servicing an EV

The schedule shortens but does not disappear. A typical EV service covers brake inspection (with particular attention to disc corrosion), tyre condition and pressures, cabin filter, wiper blades, coolant level and condition, suspension and steering, 12V battery health, and a check of the high-voltage system’s diagnostics.

Kwik Fit, for example, publishes an EV service from £227.95 against a full petrol service from £243.95 at the smallest engine tier — cheaper, but not by as much as people expect.

Anything involving the high-voltage system itself is not a DIY job. Traction battery and high-voltage component work requires a qualified high-voltage technician and the correct isolation procedure.

An EV’s 12V battery is charged from the high-voltage system, but on a car doing short trips or standing for long periods a maintainer still helps. Make sure it has an AGM mode — charging an AGM on a standard profile shortens its life.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my electric car have a 12V battery?

To power the safety-critical systems — ABS, ESP, central locking, driver assistance and occupant protection — independently of the high-voltage system, so they still work if the traction battery fails. It is also what wakes the car up, which is why a flat 12V battery leaves an EV immobile even with a full traction battery.

Can I fit a normal car battery to an EV or a stop-start car?

No, if it came with AGM or EFB. VARTA states that fitting a normal battery in place of an AGM or EFB causes rapid deterioration and an inevitable breakdown. Where a car came with AGM, only AGM may be used.

Do electric cars need special tyres?

They need tyres with the correct load rating, which on most EVs means XL and on some the newer HL standard. The “EV” markings on sidewalls are manufacturer designations rather than a formal standard — Goodyear’s EV-Ready logo, for instance, appears on all its new replacement tyres. Match the placard specification, not the badge.

Do EV brakes last longer?

The pads do. The discs often do not, because regenerative braking means the friction brakes are barely used, and Brembo identifies corrosion of the friction components as the result. Expect disc corrosion rather than pad wear to drive replacement.

Can I use ordinary antifreeze in an electric car?

No. EV coolant circulates near high-voltage components and needs low electrical conductivity — there is a dedicated standard, ASTM D8566-24, for exactly this. Use the coolant your manufacturer specifies, and dilute only with demineralised water if using a concentrate.

Is there an EV-specific cabin filter?

No. Bosch covers electric and hybrid vehicles within its single cabin filter range, and MANN-FILTER offers the same tiers regardless of drive type. Buy on fitment, and choose activated carbon if you want odour filtration.

Do EVs still need wiper blades changing?

Yes, on the same basis as any other car. There is no EV-specific wiper blade — fitment is decided by arm type and length.

Are hybrids cheaper to service than petrol cars?

Not necessarily. On Which? survey data, plug-in hybrids were the most expensive of any fuel type at £444 (0–4 years) and £445 (5–9 years), because a PHEV carries a complete combustion engine as well as a battery system.
