MG ZS Engine Oil — Grade, Capacity & Recommendations (2020-2024)
Oil Specification by Engine
| Engine | Oil grade | Specification | Capacity (inc. filter) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 T-GDi (petrol) | 5W-30 | ACEA C3 | ~4 L |
| 1.5 (NA petrol) | 5W-30 | ACEA C3 | check handbook |
MG specifies ACEA C3, which is less widely stocked — many 0W-20 oils carry only API SP without the C5 rating, so read the label. The fully electric MG models use no engine oil. Confirm capacity by VIN.
Not sure which engine you have? The required grade is on the oil filler cap; the engine code is in section D.2 of your V5C.
Recommended Engine Oils
1.0 T-GDi / 1.5 — 5W-30, ACEA C3
Any 5W-30 meeting ACEA C3
The 1.0 T-GDi uses a 5W-30 carrying ACEA C3; check the label for the C5 rating.
Which Oil Does Your MG ZS Need?
MG’s SAIC-built engines follow ACEA standards. The 1.5 Turbo petrol is designed around a thin 0W-20 (ACEA C3) for economy; the 1.0 T-GDi uses a 5W-30 (ACEA C3). The key catch is the C5 rating — it is less common than C3, and a generic API-only oil of the same viscosity is not the MG spec. The fully electric MG models, of course, use no engine oil.
Oil Change Intervals
MG’s interval is typically 12 months or ~10,000–12,000 miles. MG’s 7-year/80,000-mile warranty can be refused if the wrong oil or a missed service is recorded — keep receipts showing an ACEA C3 oil was used.
Tip: always fit a new filter with the oil and confirm the C5 rating on the bottle.
How to Check Your Oil Level
Step 1: Park on level ground and wait at least 5 minutes after turning off the engine.
Step 2: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then remove again to read the level.
Step 3: The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Top up in small amounts if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What engine oil does the MG ZS take?
The 1.5 Turbo uses 0W-20 (ACEA C3); the 1.0 T-GDi uses 5W-30 (ACEA C3). Look specifically for the ACEA C3 rating on the bottle.
Why does MG specify ACEA C3?
C5 is a low-SAPS, low-viscosity class that balances fuel economy with turbo and emissions protection. Many common 0W-20/5W-30 oils are API SP only — check for the C5 rating.
Does the electric MG need oil?
No — the fully electric MG models (such as the MG4 and ZS EV) have no combustion engine and use no engine oil. Only the petrol and plug-in hybrid models need it.
How much oil does it take?
About 4 litres including a filter change; confirm in your handbook.

How we check fitment for this guide
We cross-reference fitment figures against manufacturer specifications and OE-supplier catalogue data where available, and matched to the standard codes that actually govern fit — battery type/group sizes, wiper lengths and fitting types, bulb fitment codes, tyre size markings, and oil specifications. We work by make, model, year, engine, and build date, because a single model can take different parts across its life. Where the right part depends on your exact vehicle, we tell you to confirm by registration or VIN. More on our method →
