Volvo XC60 (2017–2025). Every Drive-E engine in the XC60 — petrol, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and diesel — uses 0W-20 to Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE. Unusually, the diesels also take 0W-20: the engines were designed for it, so don’t substitute a thicker oil.

All modern (Drive-E) XC60 engines share the same 0W-20, VCC RBS0-2AE oil. Pre-Drive-E five-cylinder engines used different specs — verify your engine generation. Confirm capacity by VIN.

Not sure which engine you have? Drive-E four-cylinder engines (T/B petrol, D diesel) all use VCC RBS0-2AE; the spec is on the oil filler cap.

Critical: Use 0W-20 meeting Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE for all Drive-E engines, including the diesels — their bearings and oil galleries were engineered for 0W-20. Do not substitute 5W-30 unless Volvo lists it for your car.

Why Your XC60 Uses 0W-20 (Even the Diesel)

Volvo’s Drive-E strategy uses one 2.0-litre four-cylinder block for every output, from the D3 diesel to the T8 plug-in hybrid. All of them are designed around 0W-20 to VCC RBS0-2AE (a low-SAPS, ACEA C5-based oil). Using 0W-20 in a diesel is unusual, but the Drive-E diesels’ bearing clearances were optimised for it — a thicker oil is not what the engine was built for. Always match VCC RBS0-2AE.

Oil Change Intervals

Volvo’s interval is typically 12 months or up to ~18,000 miles. For plug-in hybrids, do not exceed 12 months even at low mileage — time-based degradation is the limiting factor when the engine runs intermittently.

Tip: always fit a new filter with the oil and use a VCC RBS0-2AE oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine oil does the Volvo XC60 take?

0W-20 meeting Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE — the same for petrol, hybrid and diesel Drive-E engines. Check your oil filler cap.

Can I really use 0W-20 in my Volvo diesel?

Yes — Volvo’s Drive-E diesels were specifically designed for 0W-20 VCC RBS0-2AE. Do not substitute a thicker 5W-30 unless Volvo lists it for your car.

What is VCC RBS0-2AE?

It is Volvo’s own oil approval for Drive-E engines — a low-SAPS 0W-20 (ACEA C5-based) that minimises friction and protects the DPF on diesels.

How much oil does it take?

Around 4.9–5.2 litres including a filter change; confirm in your handbook.

How we check fitment for this guide

We cross-reference fitment figures against manufacturer specifications and OE-supplier catalogue data where available, and matched to the standard codes that actually govern fit — battery type/group sizes, wiper lengths and fitting types, bulb fitment codes, tyre size markings, and oil specifications. We work by make, model, year, engine, and build date, because a single model can take different parts across its life. Where the right part depends on your exact vehicle, we tell you to confirm by registration or VIN. More on our method →
