Renault Captur Engine Oil — Grade, Capacity & Recommendations (2020-2024)
Oil Specification by Engine
| Engine | Oil grade | Specification | Capacity (inc. filter) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 / 1.3 TCe (petrol) | 5W-30 | RN17 / ACEA C3 | ~5.5 L |
| 1.6 E-Tech (HEV / PHEV) | 0W-20 | Renault RN17 | check handbook |
| 1.5 Blue dCi (diesel) | 5W-30 | ACEA C4 | check handbook |
Renault specifies oil by its own RN codes alongside ACEA classes. Capacities vary by engine and build — confirm against your owner’s manual or by VIN.
Not sure which engine you have? The required spec is on the oil filler cap and the engine code is in section D.2 of your V5C.
Recommended Engine Oils
Petrol (TCe / DiG-T) — 5W-30, Renault RN17 / ACEA C3
Elf Evolution Full-Tech FE 5W-30
Renault’s factory-fill partner; carries Renault RN17 / ACEA C3.
Total Quartz INEO MC3 5W-30
Full-synthetic 5W-30 meeting ACEA C3 / Renault RN17 for turbo petrol engines.
Any 5W-30 meeting Renault RN17 / ACEA C3
Any oil listing RN17 or ACEA C3 suits the TCe/DiG-T petrol engines.
Diesel (dCi) — 5W-30, ACEA C4
Diesel: 5W-30 meeting ACEA C4 (RN0720)
dCi diesels need a very low-SAPS ACEA C4 oil — e.g. Elf Evolution Full-Tech LLX 5W-30.
E-Tech hybrid — 0W-20
E-Tech hybrid: 0W-20 (Renault RN17)
Renault/Nissan full and plug-in hybrids use a thinner 0W-20 — check your filler cap.
Renault RN17, ACEA C3 and C4 — Which Does Your Captur Need?
Renault uses its own RN oil codes on top of ACEA classes. Modern turbo petrol (TCe/DiG-T) engines use 5W-30 to RN17, which also meets ACEA C3. The dCi diesel needs the stricter ACEA C4 (very low ash) to protect its DPF. The E-Tech hybrid uses a thinner 0W-20 for efficiency. RN17 oils are backward-compatible with older RN0700/RN0710 engines, so they are a safe choice for most Renaults.
Oil Change Intervals
Renault/Nissan intervals are typically 12 months or up to ~18,000 miles via the service indicator. Turbo and hybrid engines used mainly for short trips benefit from changing sooner (around 9,000–10,000 miles) to protect timing chains and the DPF.
Tip: these engines use timing chains — clean oil changed on time is the best protection against chain wear.
How to Check Your Oil Level
Step 1: Park on level ground and wait at least 5 minutes after turning off the engine.
Step 2: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then remove again to read the level.
Step 3: The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Top up in small amounts if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What engine oil does the Renault Captur take?
The turbo petrol engines use 5W-30 to Renault RN17 / ACEA C3; the dCi diesel uses 5W-30 ACEA C4; the E-Tech hybrid uses 0W-20. Check your filler cap.
What is Renault RN17 oil?
RN17 is Renault’s own approval for modern turbocharged engines (2018 on). It is a 5W-30 that also meets ACEA C3 and is backward-compatible with older Renault engines.
Why does my Captur diesel need ACEA C4 oil?
C4 is the lowest-ash ACEA class, giving the strictest DPF protection — which several Renault-Nissan dCi diesels specifically require. A non-C4 oil can shorten DPF life.
How much oil does it take?
It varies by engine — confirm the exact figure in your handbook. The required spec is printed on the oil filler cap.

How we check fitment for this guide
We cross-reference fitment figures against manufacturer specifications and OE-supplier catalogue data where available, and matched to the standard codes that actually govern fit — battery type/group sizes, wiper lengths and fitting types, bulb fitment codes, tyre size markings, and oil specifications. We work by make, model, year, engine, and build date, because a single model can take different parts across its life. Where the right part depends on your exact vehicle, we tell you to confirm by registration or VIN. More on our method →
