How to Fit Wiper Blades — Step-by-Step Guide

Before You Start

Fitting wiper blades is one of the simplest car maintenance jobs. You need no tools for most modern cars — just the correct replacement blades. Before starting, identify your fitting type by checking our model-specific guides or looking at the connector where the blade meets the arm.

Important: Never let a bare wiper arm snap down onto the windscreen. It can crack or chip the glass. Always place a folded towel on the windscreen as insurance.

Pinch Tab (Push Button) Fitting

The most common fitting on modern cars (2010+). Found on most Ford, VW, BMW, Hyundai, and Kia models.

  1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windscreen until it locks upright.
  2. Locate the small pinch tab where the blade meets the arm.
  3. Press the tab and slide the blade down and off the arm hook.
  4. Align the new blade’s adapter with the arm hook.
  5. Push upward until you hear a definitive click.
  6. Gently lower the arm back to the windscreen.

J-Hook Fitting

The traditional universal fitting. Still common on many Japanese and budget vehicles.

  1. Lift the arm and turn the blade perpendicular to the arm.
  2. Locate the hook opening and press the release tab.
  3. Slide the blade out of the J-shaped hook.
  4. Thread the new blade onto the hook until it clicks.
  5. Lower carefully.

Bayonet Fitting

Common on French cars (Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Dacia). Uses a pin-and-lock mechanism.

  1. Lift the arm and find the locking tab on the blade adapter.
  2. Press or lift the tab and slide the blade sideways off the arm pin.
  3. Align the new blade and slide on until it locks.
  4. Check it’s secure before lowering.

Top Lock & Slim Top

Found on many modern European cars for rear wipers and some fronts.

  1. Lift the arm (rear wipers: flip the wiper up from the tailgate).
  2. Press the release button on top of the adapter.
  3. Pull the blade away from the arm.
  4. Clip the new blade on — you should feel a solid click.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change wiper blades?

Every 12 months or when you notice streaking, smearing, or squeaking. UK winters with road salt and grit are especially harsh on wiper rubber.

Can I change just one wiper blade?

You can, but we recommend changing both front blades together. Rubber ages evenly, so if one is worn, the other won’t be far behind.

Do I need tools to fit wiper blades?

No — modern wiper blades are designed for tool-free fitting. The only exception is some very old J-hook styles that may benefit from a small flathead screwdriver.

What size wiper blades does my car need?

Sizes vary by make and model. Use our wiper blade finder to look up the exact sizes for your specific car.
