Why figures can be wrong. The same model can take
different parts across engines, trims, markets, facelifts and even build
dates; manufacturers revise specifications without announcement;
supplier catalogues sometimes disagree; and despite our care we make
mistakes.
What you must do before buying or fitting. Confirm
the part by your registration or VIN (most retailers and manufacturer
sites offer this), by your handbook, or by measuring/comparing the part
you are removing. For batteries, check case size, terminal layout,
capacity/CCA and technology (flooded, EFB, AGM); for bulbs, check the
fitment code and that the bulb is road-legal for your lamp; for oil,
check the viscosity and the manufacturer approval code; for spark plugs,
check part number, gap and torque; for wiper blades, check lengths and
the fitting type.
Safety. Vehicle work can involve hot and moving
parts, electrical hazards, hydrogen gas from batteries, corrosive fluids
and the risk of a vehicle moving or falling. Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions, use the correct tools and protective equipment, and do not
attempt work you are not competent to do safely. Safety-critical parts
(brakes, tyres, steering, lighting) affect roadworthiness and MOT;
incorrect parts can be dangerous and illegal.
