GTI, GTD and R models use the same 5W-30 to VW 504 00 / 507 00. VW’s newest 1.5 eTSI “evo2” engines may instead specify 0W-20 to VW 508 00 — check the label on your oil filler cap or handbook. Capacities are approximate; confirm by VIN before buying volume.

VW 504 00, 507 00 and 508 00 — Which Does Your Golf Need?
Volkswagen specifies oil by its own approval numbers, not just viscosity. The TSI petrol engines (1.0, 1.5, and the 2.0 in GTI/R) use 5W-30 to VW 504 00, a low-SAPS LongLife oil. The TDI diesel engines use 5W-30 to VW 507 00 — the same oil family but validated to keep the diesel particulate filter clear.
VW’s newest 508 00 / 509 00 specs call for a thinner 0W-20 and apply only to the latest EA211 evo2 engines (some 1.5 eTSI). Don’t assume your Golf needs 0W-20 — the large majority take 5W-30 504/507. Always confirm against the filler cap.
Oil Change Intervals
On VW’s LongLife (variable) servicing, the Golf can run up to about 2 years or 18,000–20,000 miles between changes, calculated by the car. Many owners switch to fixed/“time & distance” servicing — every 12 months or ~10,000 miles — which is gentler on TSI carbon build-up and the diesel DPF, especially for short-trip driving.
Tip: always change the filter with the oil, and use a LongLife-rated oil if you stay on variable servicing.
How to Check Your Oil Level
Step 1: Park on level ground and wait at least 5 minutes after turning off the engine.
Step 2: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then remove again to read the level.
Step 3: The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Top up in small amounts if needed.
